5 Awe-Inspiring European Wedding Destinations
Not everyone dreams of getting married close to home. In fact, the idea of a European destination wedding is the idea of heaven for many couples – with the allure of beautiful beaches, striking mountain ranges, delicious food and that unforgettable ‘holiday feeling’ proving too difficult to ignore. If you’re thinking about tying the knot abroad, here is my pick of 5 awe-inspiring European wedding destinations.
1. Casa Batlló, Barcelona, Spain
Nestled in the heart of Barcelona, Casa Batlló is an incredible, fantastical building designed by modernist architect Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi – the visionary behind the masterpiece La Sagrada Familia – reimagined the building in 1904, and the result is quite staggering. A venue like no other, it boasts a number of elaborate, theatrical event rooms and even a roof garden. If you want an enchanting, jaw-dropping wedding reception in a celebrated cultural European city, Casa Batlló could well be it.
2. Luttrellstown Castle, nr Dublin, Ireland
The allure of Ireland – it’s hearty food, endearing folk music and unending natural beauty – is certainly undeniable. The site of the Beckham wedding, 15th century Luttrellstown Castle strikes a wonderful balance between opulence, history and a dash of showbiz! When you get married here, you hire the entire castle; including the option of twelve luxurious bedrooms for you and your guests.
3. Melissani Lake, Kefalonia
For awe-inspiring natural beauty, few wedding destinations can beat the breathtaking setting of Melissani Lake on the Greek island of Kefalonia. With soaring cave walls stretching up from gorgeous turquoise waters, this is a truly magical place to say ‘I do’ – all from your very own decorated rowing boat. The island itself is equally romantic, as the backdrop for the novel-turned-movie, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
4. Madonna Di Campiglio, Italy
At an altitude of over 1,500 metres, Madonna Di Campiglio – a ski resort in the Italian Alps – is a striking place to get married. Surrounded by snowy mountains, glaciers and valleys, the resort itself is filled with bustling life. If you want an unforgettable winter wedding in a lively setting, Madonna Di Campiglio will tick all the boxes – especially if you and your guests are also skiing or snowboarding enthusiasts.
5. ICEHOTEL, Swedish Lapland
Continuing the theme of winter weddings, the iconic ICEHOTEL – an astonishing hotel constructed with ice – has its very own Ice Church for couples to exchange their vows in unforgettable surroundings. The hotel is rebuilt each year – so no two designs of the church are ever the same. The ICEHOTEL is only open from December to April.
